Connacht Junior League

12

Ballinrobe – 5
Creggs – 24

Creggs got the second half of their league campaign off to an impressive start with a bonus point away win in Ballinrobe on Sunday. When these teams met at the start of the season in Creggs the home side could only muster a draw but, battle hardened from their recent Cup run they piled on the pressure from the kick-off and after 10 minutes Eoghan Farrell powered over for a close range try converted by Brian Cleary. Despite continuous pressure the visitors failed to build on that lead until two minutes from half-time when hooker Sean Og Higgins added a second. This followed a storming run from Tom Fleming with the pivotal moment coming earlier in the move when Brian Donoghue intercepted a promising Ballinrobe attack to send his scrum half Chris Duignan away before feeding Fleming whose charge was stopped just short of the line, ultimately yielding Higgins’ try.

Duignan added a third, converted by Cleary mid way through the second half when he rolled out from a maul and scampered between the posts. The bonus points were added ten minutes later when full-back Kevin Gavin was on the receiving end of a great pass from the returning Shane Dowd and touched down in the left corner.

Ballinrobe’s Shane Kelly grabbed a consolation try shortly afterwards but the closing minutes played out as the game had begun with Ballinrobe desperately defending their line, this time successfully, before the final whistle sounded.

This was an impressive outing for Creggs, the scrum was solid, the back row took up where they left off last Sunday and both Donoghue and Fleming were outstanding throughout.

Cleary had another fine game at out-half as had Duignan inside him but Creggs will face a much sterner test on Saturday when they travel to runaway league leaders Corinthians, kick-off at Corinthian Park 2.30 pm.

All 3 teams in action this weekend.
First up was U18s who played A training game Friday with Corrib. A very worthwhile exercise and many thanks to our hosts for making it such an enjoyable evening.
Saturday evening brought Creggs Rfc to Tuam where firstly u14s locked horns. Trys from Ailbhe Gannon,Juno Hayes,Doireann Clancy and Ceoladh Lydon were the topping on a fine team performance for this continually improving group. Strong performances too from Kyri Ruane,Louise Seoige,Sarah Smith and Heidi Watson.
Next up was the U16s. This was a cracker of a game where despite the best efforts of captain Hannah Clarke to drag her side into the game Creggs proved too strong on the day. Experienced players Beibhinn Gleeson,Keanah Irons and Charlotte O Grady continually offered themselves in both attack and defence but the powerful relentless ball carrying Creggs girls were deserving victors.

A great evenings Rugby tonight when Creggs Girls U14 and U16 travelled to play Tuam/Oughterard in Tuam in their first games of the season.

The U14's who had a lot of players playing their first ever game went down to a strong Tuam/Oughterard team but put in a great performance and then the U16"s Girls came out on top in a tough encounter against the same opposition.

Thanks to all that were available to travel tonight.
