Tuam 13 Creggs 10
Tuam ground out a hard –earned victory over Creggs in Sunday’s Connacht Junior Plate game played in ideal conditions in Tuam. The game was a stop-start affair, punctuated by lots of scrums and very little flowing rugby. The highlight of a lacklustre first half was undoubtedly a superb individual try by Creggs fullback David Brandon, who carved the Tuam defence to shreds with a scorching 80 metre run to the tryline in the 25th minute. Brandon added the conversion to leave Creggs 7 – 0 ahead at halftime.
Tuam dominated the third quarter, with Owen Halion kicking a penalty before Brian Dempsey availed of an overlap on the right to crash over for a try as the Creggs defence was outflanked . A further try by Conor Hurst put Tuam 13 – 7 ahead , but Creggs hit back with a David Brandon penalty leaving just three points between the teams entering the final ten minutes. Despite their best efforts, and being reduced to 14 men for that period,Creggs could not break down the home defence and Tuam
held on for a win which owed most to their strong pack of forwards in which Shane Noone,John Fahy and David Cunningham were prominent. Veteran centre Owen Lydon was their chief playmaker in midfield, and he used his strength and experience to good effect. Tom Fleming,Trevor Nee,Kevin Brandon, Dave Flahive and David Brandon impressed for a Creggs side missing some key players for this game.
Tuam travel to Creggs on Sunday February 22nd(kickoff 2.30pm) for a vital League game at The Green. Creggs are safely positioned mid-table,while Tuam may need a win if other results go against them.
