The home team were on top from the early stages and led 3-nil with a penalty after 10 minutes. In the second quarter, the normally tight Creggs defence was opened up by some slick handling and strong running by the Oughterard backs which resulted in two converted tries leaving the scoreline at 17-nil with half-ime approaching.
Creggs threw everything into attack but a wayward pass resulted in an intercept try which left a shell-shocked Creggs team trailing by 24-nil at the interval.
Creggs hit back with a well worked try by winger John Scroope in the 53rd. minute before Oughterard broke through for two excellent tries to halt any hopes of a Creggs revival.
Creggs responded with a well-taken try by Enda Tully in the closing stages, with Michael Farrell adding the conversion.Despite this unusually lacklustre display,Creggs have qualified for a home League semifinal in a fortnight but a vast improvement is necessary to make any further progress in the competition..
Creggs must now put the loss last Sunday behind them, as they prepare for their home Connacht J2 League Semi-Final against the winners of the Quarter-Final between Galwegians RFC (4th.) and Tuam RFC (5th.).
That Creggs home Semi-Final will be played Sunday, March 11th. in Creggs at 2.30pm.
Training continues on Tuesday and Friday nights with returning and new players always welcome. Contact Team Manager Sean Brandon or Coaches: Bernard Kilcommins, Mattie Corcoran, and Vincent Collins.
Finally, congratulations to Mattie Corcoran on his forthcoming nuptials next Saturday to Lorraine Devane. Best wishes to you both from everyone in Creggs Rugby Club.
