Creggs Rugby 17, Castlebar RFC 19. Connacht Junior 1B League

Creggs seniors completed their Connacht League campaign with an entertaining game at The Green on Sunday against Castlebar RFC.

Castlebar started impressively and put Creggs under severe pressure with centre Luke Staunton scoring a fine try after 10 minutes, which outhalf Paul Coady converted. Mark Staunton added a second try for Castlebar midway through the first half which Coady also converted to put Castlebar 14-0 ahead.

Creggs replied with a well worked try by Michael Farrell after crisp handling by the backline created an overlap for Farrell to touch down in the right corner. At the break, it was 14-5 to Castlebar.

Castlebar scored a third try in the 45th minute when the Creggs defence was stretched to breaking point to go 19 -5 ahead.

Creggs hit back immediately with a try by impressive number 8 Kevin Brandon and the game was really in the balance when Shane Dowd scored a sensational solo try following an 80 metre run leaving several defenders in his wake. Dowds conversion left just 2 points between the teams but Castlebar held out for a hard-earned win.

Creggs: K. Gavin. E. Tully, M. Farrell, T. Callaghan, D. Feeney, S. Dowd, B. Cleary, E. Farrell, B. Coady, K. Loughrey, A. Glennon, D. Nee, D. Nolan, K. Brandon, A. Leech, and C. Gore.

All 3 teams in action this weekend.
First up was U18s who played A training game Friday with Corrib. A very worthwhile exercise and many thanks to our hosts for making it such an enjoyable evening.
Saturday evening brought Creggs Rfc to Tuam where firstly u14s locked horns. Trys from Ailbhe Gannon,Juno Hayes,Doireann Clancy and Ceoladh Lydon were the topping on a fine team performance for this continually improving group. Strong performances too from Kyri Ruane,Louise Seoige,Sarah Smith and Heidi Watson.
Next up was the U16s. This was a cracker of a game where despite the best efforts of captain Hannah Clarke to drag her side into the game Creggs proved too strong on the day. Experienced players Beibhinn Gleeson,Keanah Irons and Charlotte O Grady continually offered themselves in both attack and defence but the powerful relentless ball carrying Creggs girls were deserving victors.

A great evenings Rugby tonight when Creggs Girls U14 and U16 travelled to play Tuam/Oughterard in Tuam in their first games of the season.

The U14's who had a lot of players playing their first ever game went down to a strong Tuam/Oughterard team but put in a great performance and then the U16"s Girls came out on top in a tough encounter against the same opposition.

Thanks to all that were available to travel tonight.
