Connacht Under-15 League
Creggs RFC 32, Ballina RFC 31.
Creggs Under-15’s hosted Ballina RFC on Saturday in Creggs in the Connacht Under-15A League and came away with a win by the narrowest of margins. It was a well contested, very entertaining and a high scoring game.
Creggs flew out of the blocks with two tries in the first 7 minutes from Josh Verling and Ben Johnson after some great carrying from Eoin Kelly, Ciaran Purcell and Noah Fallon up front and good hands out the backs from Cormac Dolan, DJ Hession, Jack Fleming and Senan Lambe.
Ballina responded well and scored two converted tries to take a 14-10 lead after 18 minutes. However, Creggs regrouped and scored two further tries through Edimar Fimho and Oisin O Beirne, one of which was converted by DJ Hession for a 22 points to 14 half time lead.
Ballina started the second half better and got a try and conversion to get back to 22-21 after 5 minutes of the second half but again Creggs hit back with good work from Michael McAteer, Tomas Tiernan and Daniel Flynn, which was rewarded with Tadg Lyons going over in the corner for a try. DJ Hession expertly converted for a 29-21 lead for the home team.
However, the Mayo lads were not finished and kept coming back at the home side and they kicked a penalty to bring the score back to 29-24 and attacked again after a missed kick for touch from Creggs and went over under the posts which they converted for a 31 to 29 lead for the visitors.
Creggs rebounded, continuing to attack and after some good work from Aidan Hoare, Noah Fallon, Tomas Tiernan and Eoin Kelly, Creggs were awarded a penalty and DJ Hession again stood up and converted the kick for Creggs to go head by 32-31 with 11 minutes remaining.
Ballina needed a score to secure a victory and with the Creggs forwards tiring it took some heroic defending from the likes of Tadg Lyons, Jack Fleming and Oisin O Beirne out wide to keep them at bay when a score looked likely and when Ciaran Purcell turned over the ball near the Creggs line at the finish, Cormac Dolan put the ball out for a well earned victory.
This result puts Creggs into joint third place in the League with Ballina, and Creggs has a game in hand on both Ballina and Galwegians in second-place. Creggs next game will be a big one away to Galwegians on next Saturday week in Galway. Last Saturday’s hard fought win over Ballina will surely stand to them.
