Creggs 26

Ballinasloe 16

Creggs chalked up a hard earned victory over a very determined Ballinasloe team last Sunday in Ballinasloe by ten points. The game was very competitive from the start with creggs facing a stiff breeze but they managed to work their way into the Ballinasloe half and good inter change passes from James Regan, Dan Butt, Alex Syrek and Brian Duffy set up quick ruck ball for scrum half Michael Fanell. The ball was then quickly moved across the backline with Shane Dowd, Kevin Gavin and Luke Kelly involved and the supporting Colm Fallon got on the end of the move to score at the corner flag.

The try was not converted and the home team struck back immediately with Donnacha Reilly scoring a penalty. Ballinasloe applied huge pressure on the Creggs line for the last ten minutes of the half but heroic defending by Thomas O’Byrne, Simon Spain, Rory O’Donaghue and Michael Kelly kept them out until a late home penalty left Balllinsloe leading 6 points to 5 at the break.

With wind at their backs for the second half Creggs secured field position in the Ballinasloe half and a clever switch in play involving Brian Diffley, Colin Fallon and Shane Dowd led to Kevin Gavin cutting through the centre and touching down for a great try.

Kevin then kicked a superb conversion from the touchline. From the restart Creggs gained a foothold in Ballinasloe territory and a midfield ruck saw Brian Diffley slip a few tackles and sidestep fullback Hubert Dorey to score under the posts for a superb individual try. Shane Dowd converted.

A few minutes later a turnover by man of them match Alex Syrek led to a scrum and a quick pass from Michael Fallon to winger Christy Leahy saw the latter beat the home cover defense and make it to the tryline. Again Kevin Gavin converted and Creggs were on their way to victory. A late Ballinsloe try with the last play of the game left Creggs winners by ten points and this moves them up to joint third in the table with two games left in the league.

Training takes place next Wednesday night at 7pm with Buccaneers visiting us at the weekend. Connacht coach Cory Browne will attend next Wednesday at 7pm for training.

All 3 teams in action this weekend.
First up was U18s who played A training game Friday with Corrib. A very worthwhile exercise and many thanks to our hosts for making it such an enjoyable evening.
Saturday evening brought Creggs Rfc to Tuam where firstly u14s locked horns. Trys from Ailbhe Gannon,Juno Hayes,Doireann Clancy and Ceoladh Lydon were the topping on a fine team performance for this continually improving group. Strong performances too from Kyri Ruane,Louise Seoige,Sarah Smith and Heidi Watson.
Next up was the U16s. This was a cracker of a game where despite the best efforts of captain Hannah Clarke to drag her side into the game Creggs proved too strong on the day. Experienced players Beibhinn Gleeson,Keanah Irons and Charlotte O Grady continually offered themselves in both attack and defence but the powerful relentless ball carrying Creggs girls were deserving victors.

A great evenings Rugby tonight when Creggs Girls U14 and U16 travelled to play Tuam/Oughterard in Tuam in their first games of the season.

The U14's who had a lot of players playing their first ever game went down to a strong Tuam/Oughterard team but put in a great performance and then the U16"s Girls came out on top in a tough encounter against the same opposition.

Thanks to all that were available to travel tonight.
