Castlebar 5 Creggs 10

Creggs reached the semi-finals of the Connacht U17 Division 1 League when they claimed a hard-earned victory over Castlebar last Sunday in the wet windy Mayo venue. Overnight rain made conditions very difficult but Creggs made a determined start with prop forward Brian Coady making a number of carries supported by second rows Michael Kelly and James Regan. Number 8 Brian Diffley also got across the gain line and Creggs established a position inside the Castlebar 22 metre line. This yielded a penalty which out half Shane Dowd converted. Castlebar struck back after winning some lineout possession inside the Creggs half and a speculative kick into the Creggs 22 metre area was not dealt with and they scored a deserved try. Creggs were losing 5 points to 3 at half time as the try was not converted. Even though the conditions militated against fast open rugby Creggs managed to gain a foothold in Castlebar territory early in the second half and a solid scrum anchored by Simon Spain and Dan Butt led to Brian Diffley picking and sprinting under the posts for a great try. Shane Dowd converted the remainder of the half saw Creggs resisting Castlebar pressure with great tackling by Robbie Daly, Colm Fallon, Donal Kelly, Luke Kelly and Connor Gore. Creggs now can look forward to a semi-final against Sligo or Galwegians in a few week time.
