Buccaneers 19 Creggs 10

A late try by Buccaneers created by out half Luke Carty earned victory for the home team by 9 points but in reality this was a very closely fought battle between two evenly matched teams. Bucaneers opened brightly and scored a converted try but an early attack by Simon Spain, Michael Kelly and Callum McGee yielded a penalty which Shane Dowd converted. A second try before half time by Brian Collins left the Athlone side 14-3 ahead but Creggs rallied and a great drive from back row Matthew Brandon supported by Conor McNeill, Brian Coady and Rory O’Donoghue saw the ball passed by Rory Collins to Shane Dowd, Rory O’Brolachain and then to Kevin Gavin who skilfully evaded a number of tacklers from the half way line to score close to the posts for a great try which Shane Dowd converted. Creggs then piled on the pressure with concerted drives from the forwards particularly Dan Butt, Matthew Brandon and Michael Kelly but the Buccaneers defence would not be breached. Final score Buccaneers 19 Creggs 10. Creggs have a home league game this weekend. Further details later in the week.
