Creggs Development off to great League winning start

78

Creggs Development Team 25,
Oughterard RFC. 24.

Creggs staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Oughterard in a stirring Connacht League 3A contest played in perfect conditions at The Green on last Saturday evening.
Oughterard played some tremendous rugby in the opening quarter and blitzed the home team with three tries and a conversion to lead by 17-0l before Michael Farrell kicked a fine penalty for Creggs.
Gradually the Creggs defence got to grips with the hard-running Oughterard backline and the home pack also responded with some powerful driving and scrummaging.
A fine try by Enda Tully, which Michael Farrell converted narrowed the gap to 17-10 before centre Niall Cunniffe crashed over for a try just before halftime. A Farrell penalty in the 50th minute put Creggs ahead for the first time but Oughterard hit back with an excellent fourth try to lead by 24-18 heading into the final quarter.
The exchanges were frenetic as Creggs threw everything into attack but Oughterard tackled with great determination until Ja Hughes found a rare gap in their defence and he sliced through for a fine try. Michael Farrell was ice-cool as he slotted a tremendous conversion to give Creggs a 1 point lead with just 4 minutes remaining.
Oughterard broke downfield and only heroic defence prevented them from scoring as they spent the last few minutes camped on the Creggs line. They almost got over on a few occasions before referee Jason Craughwell blew the final whistle, which was greeted with a mixture of relief and elation by the home crowd.
