Creggs RFC 17, Sligo RFC 20.
Creggs Under-18 Girls came up just short in their quest for a Connacht League and Cup double last Monday in the Sportsground in Galway, where they lost out on a scoreline of 20 points to 17 to Sligo RFC.
This was the Creggs Under-18 Girls first Under-18 Girls Cup Final and with all but one of the players under-age again next year, this has proved to be a very successful year for the Under-18 Girls, winning the Connacht League and being runners up in the Cup
Sligo started the game better and were 12-0 up before Jemima Adams Verling for in for the first of her two tries which was converted by Eabha Dowd for a 12-7 half time scoreline in favour of Sligo.
Sligo again took the initiative at the start of the second half and went in for another score to lead 17-7 before Jemima Adams Verling got in for her second try reducing the deficit to 17-12.
A series of penalties against the Creggs Girls kept Sligo with the territorial advantage and they extended the lead with nine minutes left with a penalty, extending the lead out to 20-12.
As with the League Final before Christmas, the Creggs Girls never gave up and some good carries by Rachel McDonald, and Roisin Maher in the Sligo 22″, the Creggs girls moved the ball wide and Megan Donohoe dived over in the corner to bring the score back to 20-17.
But alas there was no time for the Creggs girls to repeat their exploits in the League Final, when they scored with the last play to win, and they just fell short on this occasion. Thanks to all the supporters and parents for the support on the day and for the support when the girls return to Creggs on Monday evening.
