Creggs U13 were beaten by Monivea in the U13 cup in Monivea last Saturday morning, In a very competitve cup game this game went right down to the wire when a try by Monivea in the last play of the game finally ended a very spirited Creggs display.

Creggs had the much better of the first half and had a couple of chances to score before Mark Purcell finally put them ahead after 18 minutes with a penalty. Up front Aodha Hession, Tom Farrell, Jack Keegan and Eric O Doherty were prominent with ball in hand and in defence and out wide Karl Healy, Jack McGahon, Simon Harkins, Paddy Gannon, Roddie McGuinness Richard O Beirne were showing well.

In the second half the bigger Monivea Pack and especially their Number 8 Sean Gilmore were now finding holes in the Creggs tiring defence and , when Gilmore scored two quick tries to give Monivea a 12-3 lead it looked like hey would pull away however Creggs rallied and after Jack Keegan was stopped just short, from the resultant 5 metre scrum, the Creggs Number 8 picked and Passed to Number 10 Mark Purcell who put in a cross field kick for Paddy Gannon to touch down to leave the score 12-8 with only minutes remaining. In the last minute Monivea Number 8 Sean Gilmore again got the ball in open play and touch down under the posts for the final score of the game.

Creggs were short a few players due to illness and had no cover at front row on a day when Eric O Doherty, Evan Comiskey and Thomas O Brien put in a great shift against their bigger opponents, John Why and Tom Farrell in the second row was always industrious around the pitch and the Creggs back row of Sean Tully, Jack Keegan and Aodha Hession were tireless in their tacking. In the back line Kealan Gunning, David Finnera did well on their introduction.

Creggs RFC U.13s suffered yet another narrow defeat on Sunday last, this time away to Ballina in Sunday morning last. After conceding an early try from a Ballina scrum we were under real pressure when Brian O Connor put in a tremendous try saving tackle and we managed to force a turn over under our own posts and clear. We finally got a foothold in the opposing half and after a superb attacking scrum and great drives from Matthew Donnelly and Jack Lally the ball was fed to winger Luke Hayes who danced around the despairing Ballina defence to cross the line right on half time. Scoreline Ballina 7. Creggs 5 at the break.
The second half played out like the first with some resolute defence from the Creggs lads. However the line was breached on 12 minutes and now we faced a 7 point deficit. With just 3 minutes remaining and having put in a ferocious defensive display we were rewarded with a try by Michael O Brien who was in the right place at the right time to punish a poor Ballina defensive kick to leave just 2 points between the sides. In the last play of the game though we came unstuck while trying desperately to find the winning score as Ballina scored in the corner to leave the full time score Ballina 17. Creggs 10.
Training continues Wednesday evenings at 7 and we are away to Buccaneers next weekend.
